Four steps that keep the install boring

  1. Step 1

    Back up first

    Create a Windows restore point or a full disk image if the target disk holds work you cannot rebuild. Partition tools are powerful; a rollback path is part of the workflow.

  2. Step 2

    Open the installer source

    Use Continue to installer source above. Prefer a clean HTTPS path. Skip pages that push unrelated toolbars or fake “update” prompts.

  3. Step 3

    Verify the publisher

    In SmartScreen or file Properties → Digital Signatures, confirm the signed publisher looks legitimate. If Windows shows an unknown publisher and you did not expect that, stop.

  4. Step 4

    Install, then follow a guide

    After install, screenshot Disk 0 / Disk 1 order and drive letters. Then open a resize, clone, or recovery article instead of inventing steps on a live system disk.

These notes take a minute and prevent most “I moved the wrong edge” stories.

  • Note whether the target volume is BitLocker-protected and where the recovery key lives.
  • Use a stable power source for laptops; long Apply jobs hate unexpected sleep.
  • Confirm free space sits on the correct side of the partition you will extend.
  • For system clones, plan EFI / recovery partitions — file copy is not the same as disk clone.
